Overview
The NMEA Fast Packets Module is an additional feature for supporting the National Marine Electronics Association Fast Packet messages. This module integrates with the existing Multi-CAN J1939 Protocol Stack implementation to handle the fast packet messages. The NMEA Fast Packets module has been thoroughly tested and complies to the existing NMEA J1939 standard. By handling the low-level details of the Fast Packets communication, the NMEA Fast Packets Protocol Stack Module allows the developer to focus solely on implementing the application.

The NMEA Fast Packets module requires a Multi-CAN J1939 Protocol Stack. For a proven solution, the Noregon Multi-CAN J1939 Protocol Stack (sold separately) has been thoroughly tested for integration with the NMEA Fast Packets module.

Licensing
Your purchase of the NMEA Fast Packets J1939 Protocol Stack Module includes a royalty-free license. The only restrictions are the Noregon or HAL copyright must be maintained in the code and the customer can not resell the protocol stack as a standalone product.

The J1939 Protocol Stack Layers

• Hardware Abstraction Layer acts as a bridge between the Physical Layer, OSI Layer 1 and the Data Link Layer. The HAL is completely dependent upon the physical CAN hardware selected. Included are instructions for developing a new HAL and linking it to the Data Link Layer.
• Data Link Layer (OSI Layer 2). The CAN controller implements some of the data link layer; however some tasks are required of the microcontroller program such as assembly of the CAN ID from data elements (and corresponding disassembly into data elements from the CAN ID). Note that J1939 only supports extended CAN data frames.
• Transport Layer (OSI Layer 4). A complex layer containing algorithms to receive and transmit J1939 transport protocol messages. Both Broadcast Announce Messaging (TP-BAM) and Connection Management (TP-CM) are supported.
• Network Management Layer. Supports all the required J1939 network management functions e.g. Address Claim and Address Request. The type of device that you are developing will have some effect on how this layer functions. J1939/81 defines the different types of devices and how they operate on the network.

Protocol Stack Minimum Footprint
The following numbers were derived using the Keil compiler, 1 transport buffer, and exclude the HAL, runtime support, and any custom application code:

Engineering technical support is available by email for a period of 60 days following your purchase. This 60 day warranty/support period also covers correction of any defects that you might find in the Protocol Stack as you integrate it into your target hardware/processor.
