SAE J2534 (also known as Pass-Thru) is a standard for communications between a personal computer and a vehicle. All car manufacturers are required to provide a SAE J2534 Pass Thru service to everyone for re-flashing emissions related controllers.
Previously vehicle manufacturer tools for re-flashing and diagnostics of emissions related ECUs was either very expensive or not available to independent garages. Now organisations such as the European Union, EPA and CARB have required car manufacturers to allow for emissions-related modules to be reprogrammed by independents. Often other features such as diagnostics and key reprogramming is also possible.
Now specific car manufacturer tools can be leased on hourly, daily, monthly or annual basis so that the repairer has the flexibility to suit his business and budget. The cost of the software tool lease can be added to a particular customer’s job or the cost can be spread out over the year.
Since the introduction of OBD, software updates has become one of the major reasons for service updates and fixes. Fixes required may affect fault codes, fuel efficiency, safety and many other improvements to the vehicle performance:
- Most vehicles on the road require calibration and software updates to fix small issues that have been found.
- It may be that the symptom that your customer is reporting with his vehicle may simply be fixed by flashing the latest ECU software
- You get to keep the vehicle repair and the customer at your workshop and grow a new revenue stream
